Cape Kennedy UPI reports the Titan 3 rocket team setting final stages for launch as skies clear and countdown proceeds smoothly. Engineers monitor systems while officials anticipate a successful lift off from Cape Kennedy.
Pravda reports the dismissal of Mikhail Y. Matsepuro, director of the Institute for the Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture in Minsk region. He allegedly ran the institute as a personal fief, wasted funds on worthless research, and had his Lenin Prize stripped amid charges of false claims.
The FAA ordered special inspections of all Lockheed Jetstars including the one used by President Johnson after a privately owned Jetstar dived abruptly from 13 000 feet over southern Pennsylvania before being recovered at 3000 feet. Eight of 50 civil and 15 military Jetstars inspected showed no serious defects.
