Senators Vie For Credit Over ABM Compromise

In Washington and Manchester New Hampshire New England rivals Senator Thomas J. McIntyre and Senator Edward Brooke vie to claim credit for a proposed compromise on the Safeguard antiballistic missile plan. Brooke urged delaying deployment while radar and computer research continues, McIntyre outlined a balanced alternative, and both seek to influence a wary Armed Services Committee amid Nixon opposition. The wider public debate centers on whether any ABM compromise can survive a split among key lawmakers and administration stance, with prospects of a deadlock and narrow political gains.
