Berkshire Farming Acres of Blue Chips in Forestry
Massachusetts woodland owners face a trust gap with lumbermen as NEFF and private foresters push selective cutting to grow value. Public foresters offer limited help while fees for private foresters range from 1 per thousand feet plus 12 to 14 percent of sale or 10 percent for larger jobs. Foundation forests provide tax benefits and long term conservation, with 13 sites nationwide and 100 million board feet cut annually in the state contributing about 50 million dollars in gross product.
