Tass reports Luna 6 will pass about 96 000 miles from the moon due to steering failure. A later Tass note says the automatic Luna 6 station will pass at 160 000 kilometers from the moon after a June 9 correction maneuver. UPI notes U S sources count at least 12 failures or partial failures in Russia lunar program with only two successes.
Charlestown residents vote to form a separate township amid a $41 million urban renewal plan for 525 acres including Bunker Hill. About 350 members of the Self Help Organization urge signatures from the 8,900 voters. If approved, an interim government would run until a town council is elected and a court injunction may halt renewal. Boston Mayor Collins backs the renewal plan, awaiting hearings and federal clearance.
Apollo era tone follows McDivitt and White as they land at Ellington AFB near Houston after Gemini 4, greeted by 200 reporters. On Mayport pier, Florida Governor Burns presents plaques as White hints at fatigue but shows no serious medical issues. The duo recounts the splashdown and thanks Wasp crew and Marines amid plans for a six day hero’s tour including a Chicago parade and a University of Michigan ceremony. In Springfield Massachusetts CORE president Oscar Bright and 11 members were fined 50 dollars each after a sit in at the School Superintendent’s office to protest alleged racial imbalance. Judge Charles Sloan said the group disrupted the peace as officers removed them after they refused orders.

Johnson holds an informal White House review of Viet Nam with Ambassador Taylor and top advisers. Taylor will meet again with the National Security Council. Participants include Rusk McNamara Raborn Ball Vance Bundy and Bundy. An AP dispatch from Leominster Mass reports 101 year old Anna Capasso naturalizing.
Rep. Wright Patman urged William M. Martin Jr. to resign as Federal Reserve chairman and said Johnson should appoint his own successor. Patman accused Martin of challenging the President, triggering a stock market drop, and pursuing costly monetary policies. He condemned the Fed’s six month tightening and warned of recurring recessions. Martin and advisers were to meet President Johnson at the White House.
New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner announced he will not seek re election, ending a three term tenure. The move clears the field for Republican John V. Lindsay who campaigns nationwide, while Wagner cites personal reasons including time away from his sons. Deputy leaders and vice president Humphrey urged a bid, but Wagner remains firm.

In Dong Xoai, Viet Nam, a Viet Cong assault overwhelmed a Vietnamese relief battalion and overran the district capital and airstrip. GE unveiled a 50 000 pound thrust turbojet at an international aero exhibit in Paris claiming four engines could push SSTs several hundred miles an hour faster than current flights. A New York to Paris trip could drop to about two hours, with New York to London around 1 hour 43 minutes. GE projects prototype SST flight in three years.
The South Korean navy seized two armed North Korean boats off the fast coast during the night. Twenty eight people aboard were arrested and a variety of arms were seized. The navy said the vessels were smuggling Communist agents into South Korea.
