Mayors Fail to Break GE Strike Deadlock in NY
In New York, meetings of 34 mayors and top union and company negotiators made no progress toward ending the General Electric strike. Mayors advocated options like fact finding, arbitration, and a workers vote, with a two week deadline for a settlement and possible presidential intervention. GE argued against imposed settlements while noting its offer would raise pay by about 900 million over three years, with initial increases of 20 cents hourly plus skilled boosts.
