Defense Of Canal Is Pledged
Washington pledged to defend the Panama Canal while pursuing a Good Neighbor policy with Panama. The White House said the security of the canal must not be imperiled and that the United States will honor its obligation to operate the canal efficiently for all who depend on it. President Johnson received a detailed canal-zone briefing from Thomas Mann and Cyrus Vance after a two hour meeting with top advisers. The White House noted U S forces acted admirably under provocation and emphasized restoring law and order as the first priority before treaty revision discussions. A joint cooperation committee was established by the Inter-American Peace Commission of the OAS to address the crisis.

State Moves To Forcibly Build Lee Sewerage System
The state Department of Health will seek to compel Lee to construct a sewerage system. A hearing will be scheduled with Arthur H. NASA announced plans to paint the eastern sky with pink sodium vapor clouds at sunset midnight and dawn to measure turbulence and wind direction and speed between 37 and 118 miles altitude. Overnight flier lands on Belcher Lake to wait snowstorm
Olian Dyer of 85 Main St. Shirley landed his light plane on Lake Metacomet Belchertown to escape a heavy snowstorm. After clearing 8 to 10 inches of snow with prop wash he took off and continued to Pittsfield. He said there was no trouble beyond snow removal and a brief wait for weather to clear.
