Slain UMW Leader Yablonski Fodder for Mine Shutdowns
In Clarksville Pennsylvania roving miners shut down at least six large mines to honor slain United Mine Workers leader Joseph A Jock Yablonskis and his family. Yablonski and his wife and daughter were found shot in their farmhouse as police investigated indications of a professional assassination. Miners across U S Steel Corporations Robena Bethlehem Steel and James & Laughlin mines refused to report for midnight shifts and again at daylight, while Yablonski’s sons asked for no memorials or extra union presence at their fathers funeral. Police said the killer left no sign of struggle and robbery was ruled out. The killings were discovered by Kenneth Yablonski who found his father away from home after unanswered calls.

U S Study Urges Refinements In Heart Transplant Methods
A government task force says heart transplants remain largely investigational two years after the first operation but show promise. It calls for stronger efforts to solve organ rejection and to advance artificial heart devices, noting some patients have lived beyond a year and others returned to useful lives. The report, led by Dr. James V. Warren, also warns that only about 32,000 of the 200,000 Americans under 65 who die annually from heart disease are potential transplant candidates due to illness or rapid death.
