Purnell Disputes Mayor On Cost of Pay Increase
Councilman George A. Purnell disputes Mayor Dillon over the cost of proposed city pay raises. Purnell says the mayor's plan would raise the tax rate by $1.90, higher than the $1.09 believed by others, while the council backed a three-step two-step package and the mayor supports a two-step across the board. Dillon vows to veto the council package. Purnell, chair of the Ordinances and Rules Committee, plans to draft the ordinance Tuesday. He defends the higher wage plan to curb police and fire moonlighting, noting it would raise policemen and firemen about $12 weekly and other city workers about $8, with the mayor proposing $8 weekly for all.
