Court Backs Big Merger of Railroads
The Supreme Court approved the merger of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads. The new Great Northern Pacific & Burlington will have about 7.8 billion dollars in assets and over 26,500 miles of track from Chicago to Seattle and from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. The decision rejected Justice Department objections, citing the merger as promoting a more efficient transportation unit.
