GE Sets World Record Voltage Transmission
GE today boosted the United States ahead in extra high voltage transmission by placing 710000 volts on its Lenox prototype, the highest operating voltage ever, surpassing Russia’s 600000-volt record from 1954. WMEC VP Robert L. Gibson closed the switch as wind swept the Housatonic valley and technicians watched from an 80-foot tower. Pittsfield and Berkshire County see this as a leadership moment in high voltage research, with GE’s Lenox facility expanding its five mile outdoor testing span and a three million volt impulse generator under construction inside a plastic dome. The project, a five year effort begun in 1958, aims to move larger blocks of power with improved equipment, with GE and WMEC joined by 10 contributing companies. Dr. Pier A. Abetti oversees the team in Lenox as the work progresses toward 1963 completion.

Blue Laws Seen as Economic Pressure on Jews in Supreme Court
In a two day Supreme Court session about state blue laws, Jewish merchants argued that Pennsylvania Sunday sales limits force observant Jews to choose between Sabbath observance and profit. Massachusetts kosher supermarket counsel echoed claims that Sunday meat bans impose hardship and function as religious coercion, challenging the law as unconstitutional favoritism.
