Duffy's Tavern creator Ed Gardner dies era ends

Ed Gardner who voiced Archie in Duffy's Tavern from 1941 to 1951 has died, ending a radio era. Gardner born Edward Peggenberg in Astoria Queens, built a NYUpegged persona and created Archie a naive con man beloved by seven million weekly listeners. The show featured Miss Duffy and Finnegan, both enduring icons, with Duffy an absentee owner and the program a symbol of a vanished radio era.

Toshiro Mifune dominates a cast of theatrical props as gang factions clash, with Masaru Sato's score praised as a smart parody of Henry Mancini. The critic calls the satire clear but sometimes dull and mildly critiques audience distraction during subtitles.
