State Certifies Beach Scum As Harmless
BOSTON AP Two culprits Tintinnus and Ulothrix cleared as harmless by the state Department of Public Health. The marine algae have clogging North Shore beaches by the millions. Green and brown scum formed along short lines north of Boston were diagnosed as harmless to bathers by the Division of Environmental Health. Local officials sought analysis as the residue appeared early this month on beaches from Winthrop to Gloucester. Director John C. Collins said the algae would disappear after the scum is broken up by wind and tides.
