Molotov Fire Devastates Vienna Embassy Building

A man threw a Molotov cocktail into the Canadian Embassy offices in Vienna, starting a major blaze on the Danube canal. Two people were killed and scores injured. 15 hospitalized with burns. The fire damaged the Vienna Insurance Co building that also houses the Swedish Embassy. Police offered no motive.

U S Russia Advance Sea Bed Treaty Talks in Geneva

The United States confirms ongoing talks with the Soviet Union on a treaty to ban military use of the sea bed. Reports say Russia dropped full demilitarization, backing a ban limited to nuclear arms and weapons of mass destruction. Moscow reportedly seeks extra conventional weapons and a 12 mile enforcement zone instead of the U S 3 mile limit.

Massachusetts Legislature Streamlines Civil Service Rules

Massachusetts lawmakers approved major changes to Civil Service rules to speed hiring for hard to fill executive posts. Key steps include immediate exams for open jobs, removal of the waiting period, and empowerments to subpoena witnesses and hear appeals. Other reforms reactivated eligibles lists, noncompetitive exams, and provisional hires while preserving veteran preference.

Aussie Captain Acquitted In Evans Crash

Captain Jehn P Stevenson of Melbourne was acquitted of negligence in the Evans collision that killed 74 Americans. The five member court martial found him not guilty and honorably acquitted after two charges were heard. The verdict came as U S Ambassador Toon sought information on detained Americans with no result.
