Australia Debates Expanded Defence Budget Amid Tax Hikes
Canberra treasurer Harold Holt unveiled a budget boosting defense spending by 27 percent contributing to a 10 percent rise overall. Revenue gains from higher income, fuel, and excise taxes fund the plan, with Australia ordering U.S. military equipment including F-111 aircraft and two destroyers. Malaysia aid of 21.28 million over two years is included. Opposition leader Arthur Calwell attacks the tax mix as unfair to the poor while deficits prompt loans totaling 168 million. Inflationary risk and slower growth are forecast despite a strong economy.
