Stormy predawn rain brings relief and damage to Berk shire
A predawn thunderstorm woke Berk shire residents at 4 30 am delivering much needed rain but no cooling air. Lightning struck the DeBlieux home at 50 Waverly-St causing a kitchen corner fire quickly damped by a pan of water. Fire crews responded to a signal alarm at Pittsfield General Hospital and to Marland Mold at 125 Pock's Road. Western Mass Electric reported only scattered outages with 34 Churchill Street homes briefly darkened after a tree hit a line. An Amicale Spinning Co plant faced a voltage issue and WMEC warned of a 22 000 volt emergency line outage between Silver Lake and Doreen Street substation. Continued on Page 19.

First Cavalry Deployed to Ports of Embarkation
The 1st Cavalry Division (airborne) created July 1 for Viet Nam duties will depart Ft. Benning for ports of embarkation by Thursday. More than half the troops are already en route to Viet Nam with the rest bound for Savannah Georgia and Charleston DC over the next three days.
