Five States Agree To Work To End Lake Erie Pollution
Five states in the Lake Erie basin reached a basic agreement with federal officials to halt heavy pollution within five years. The plan calls for billions of dollars in municipal sewage and industrial waste projects in New York Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and Michigan. The lake now receives about a ton of chemical contaminants every minute from Detroit Toledo Cleveland Erie and Buffalo, harming water supplies and recreation for about 10 million people. Observers warn this could be one of the worst large scale waterway pollutions. The interstate accord follows hearings in Cleveland and Buffalo under federal pollution control laws.
