Rioting in Los Angeles Black Ghetto Injures 100

A second major riot in Los Angeles's Watts area left more than 100 injured, including 13 officers, as 700 police deployed in combat formation. Dick Gregory was shot in the leg but urged calm as crowds looted, set fires, and attacked vehicles amid continued clashes.

Civil Rights Camp-Out Raises City Tension

Civil rights demonstrators in Springfield enter the fourth day of a city hall camp out as tensions rise. More than 50 Negroes stay on the steps with crowds of whites across the street. A 16 year old was charged with threatening with a fishing knife. bail set at 1000 dollars. Negroes demand seven police officers be removed after a nightclub brawl. The mayor rejects the demand.

Woman dies in North Hillsdale house fire

A 51 year old woman, Jean H. Dunning, was found dead in a second floor bedroom after a fire at the Coun ty Route 21 home. Her husband and sister escaped unharmed as fire crews, aided by a pond, brought the blaze under control. The autopsy will be performed at Peck and Peck Funeral Home in Copake.

Papandreou Demands Reappointment or Vote

In Athens a 40 minute royal palace clash between 25 year old King Constantine and 77 year old former Premier George Papandreou raised the monarchy's fate as Papandreou demanded either reappointment as premier or immediate new elections. Supporters protested with banners as observers noted wavering parliamentary backing amid a crisis that began July 15 over the defense ministry post.

South Korea to send 15000 troops to Vietnam

Seoul report says South Korea's National Assembly voted 101 to 1 to dispatch 15,000 Korean combat troops to South Vietnam to combat Communist guerrillas. Two abstentions and few negatives noted. The decision follows long debate on the U.S. alliance and regional security.

Engine Afire Forces Safe Landing Over Mount Washington

A KC97 Stratotanker from the 100th Bomb Wing landed safely after one of its four engines caught fire over Mount Washington at 6,288 feet. Pilot Douglas Forsythe shut down the engine and the fire was extinguished by wind. The five crew members were unharmed and the plane returned to base for an emergency landing.

Battle in Mekong Delta Claims Heavy Viet Cong Loss

Saigon reports that Vietnamese government forces crushed a Viet Cong concentration in the Mekong Delta about 90 miles southwest of Saigon. Official totals cited about 230 Viet Cong killed with 156 confirmed in heavy fighting.

Rep. John F. Thompson of Ludlow, noted as the Iron Duke and former speaker of the Massachusetts House, dies at 45 from acute alcoholism in Westwood.
