Echo I Satellite Still Orbiting Past Its Useful Life

Echo I, the 100 foot diameter balloon satellite, remains in orbit on its third anniversary. Scientists expected a nine month life but it has circled Earth about 13,500 times and traveled roughly 420 million miles. Dr. Luigi G. Jacchia of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory predicts it will not disintegrate until late 1966 or early 1967. Originally used for passive radio experiments and atmospheric density studies, it has now almost outlived its usefulness.
