Bar Head Sees Protection of Society as Basic Right
In Miami Beach, ABA president Lewis F. Powell urged law and order as society’s core need, backing Katzenbach's stance that criminal investigation serves law enforcement over equality. He criticized racist opponents and sit-in tactics, urged tighter rules on lawyer statements, and warned that without protection from criminal molestation, society and rights may unravel. Powell stressed that courts and legislatures, not streets, must reconcile differences and safeguard rights. He noted three signs of deteriorating law and order, and called for stronger grievance procedures within the profession. His one year term ends Friday, to be followed by Edward W. Kuhn.
