Tanglewood and Berkshire Music Center Rise in US Music Seat
The essay recounts how small-town Pittsfield and the Berkshire region became a global hub for chamber and orchestral music. It highlights Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge's philanthropy, the Library of Congress concert hall, and Koussevitzky's Tanglewood vision. It notes the 1938 shed, the need for a permanent roof, and Copland and Goldovsky shaping the Berkshire Music Center as a pioneer in American musical life.
