Confusion Over Interest Sparks Savings Bank Turf War
In Pittsfield the entry of commercial banks into savings accounts has stirred a competition over interest. Banks like First Agricultural, Berkshire Bank & Trust, Pittsfield National and Union Federal touted day-to-day and instant rates at around 4 percent, creating mass confusion for savers juggling dividends versus quarterly incentives. Analysts note about 54 variables affect how interest is calculated, with at least 20 variations active in Berkshire County.
