Steel Talks Bog As Deadline Nears

Washington AP reports steel industry labor talks between AFL-CIO United Steelworkers Union and 10 major firms are near stalemate with a strike set for midnight Aug 31 if no agreement is reached. Johnson may intervene to prevent a strike that could slow the economy. union seeks an 18 cent hourly raise plus wage benefits.

Lenox Fire Destroys Former Berkshire Country Day School

A Lenox fire leveled the former Berkshire Country Day School at 111 Walker St. late last night. Flames rose high as firefighters fought the blaze for hours, with nearby properties protected and no injuries reported by 12:15 AM. The 14-room, 344-story high structure, built by George Morgan, contained equipment moved to Stockbridge but remained in Lenox. The cause was not released and witnesses described a rear cellar origin with sparks threatening adjacent homes.

Bondy Injured in Light-Plane Crash Near Route 7

Wind s or Mountain School headmaster Heinz Bondy 41 sustained only a minor head laceration when a four passenger Piper Cherokee 235 crashed behind the state Department of Public Works yard off Route 7 yesterday afternoon. The sole occupant said engine trouble forced a forced landing at about 2 35 p m after taking off from Pittsfield Airport. The plane was a total loss.

British Bridge Partners Found Guilty of Cheating

Two members of the British bridge team were found guilty of illegally conveying signals at the World Bridge Championships in Buenos Aires. Terence Reese and Boris Schapiro, accused by the American team, were judged by the World Bridge Federation Executive Committee after a May 23 hearing. The captain withdrew them from competition. the ruling became public this week as the ACBL summer nationals proceed in Chicago.

Baseball Legion Northboro Triumphs Over Williamstown 6–0

Legion Northboro defeated Williamstown 6 to 0 in a baseball matchup. Arlington beat Wellesley 8 to 5 in another game. First game Pittsfield fell to Springfield 1 to 6, while Springfield won the second 7 to 4. Elmira defeated Williamsport 9 to 5. York edged Reading 6 to 5. Chicago beat New York 4 to 3, Philadelphia defeated Pittsburgh 4 to 0, Milwaukee won 8 to 4 over Houston, and Chicago beat Cleveland 11 to 5. Detroit toppled New York 4 to 1 in the closing game.

Viet Cong asks Hanoi for help to fight Americans

Tokyo AP dispatch reports Hanoi radio quoted the Viet Cong calling for North Vietnamese support and regrouped patriots to return south to aid guerrillas. Hanoi previously denied direct involvement but said volunteers could be sent if asked. Washington commented that the text echoed prior communist propaganda.

Kosygin Accuses U S Aggression At Kremlin Reception

In Moscow Premier Kosygin denounced U S actions in Viet Nam calling the United States an aggressor. Ambassador Foy D. Kohler staged a walkout and voiced dismay at Kosygin's remarks while he praised Hanoi and urged cessation of bombing. King Mohammed Zahir Shah attended without criticizing the U S. In England a local firm seeks a model with large biceps for farm equipment ads.
