Charter Revision Seeks Election of City Council President

Brown urged the Charter Revision Committee to let voters elect the city council president, with three at large councilmen and two city-wide posts. The proposal, presented during a Police Station meeting led by Joseph Scelsi, drew mixed views on a city police commission and on ward versus at large council seats. Richmann favored a commission with caution to mayoral powers, while Crow and Butler favored ward-focused representation and challenged at large contests as popularity plays. The group debated the timing for a council leadership role and cautioned about experience for presidents in stepping into mayoral duties.
