Killed Over Weekend In Berkshire Traffic
An elderly Pittsfield woman, two North Berkshire men, and a 12 year old on a sidewalk surfboard were killed in Berkshire County traffic accidents this weekend. Other fatal crashes included two Torrington youths in Kent Connecticut. Mrs Dessa Lazarus, 72, died after a car struck a tree on West Housatonic Street. Police said brakes may have failed. Mrs Lazarus had become known for catering and was an opera singer in earlier life. She leaves a husband and son, with services planned at Temple Anshe Amunim. In Adams a Curran Memorial Highway crash killed Adam Nowak, 53, and Edward Monette, 34, both died at North Adams Hospital from head and chest injuries. Police attributed Nowak’s car veering across the center strip into Monette’s car. Nowak leaves a wife, three daughters, and siblings.

Storm Drops Half Inch of Needed Rain
A summer-type thunderstorm produced about half an inch of rain early this morning, adding to April’s deficit. The storm, starting around 3, brought widespread rainfall across New England and ending recent forest and brush fires. Massachusetts reported 186 fires yesterday as temperatures stay near seasonal levels for the rest of the week.
