National Symphony Cancels 1963 64 Season
Washington official says the strikebound National Symphony Orchestra has washed out the rest of its 1963-64 season after failed contract talks with the District of Columbia Federation of Musicians. Pianist Van Cliburn’s appearances were canceled along with programs with the American Light Opera Company and the Music for Young America series. Musicians claim five members were dismissed as a reprisal for union activity by conductor Howard Mitchell, who denies the charge and asserts authority over musician judgments.
