A sociable lament on musician earnings across opera, orchestras, and popular scores. It notes $25,000 payments to My Fair Lady’s scorerecorders, then cites a world sales figure of 514 million copies for $25 million. It discusses hourly rates, job insecurity, and the high costs for orchestras, with examples from Isaac Stern and government funding debates. It contrasts top artists' fees with journeymen’s modest incomes and highlights seasonal work, family finances, and the piper’s demand to be paid.
