Cannon’s acclamation speech opposes labor crusade led by Samuel Gompers over the anti injunction bill. He defends the tariff and says it should be revised only when beneficial to the masses.
In Minneapolis on August 17 the Grand Army of the Republic elected R B Brown of Zanesville Ohio as commander in chief at its annual meeting. William H Armstrong of Indianapolis was named senior vice commander and RE Fen ton of Detroit junior vice commander. Archbishop John Ireland served as chaplain in chief and W H Johnston of Lincoln Nebraska was surgeon general. Strong opponents C G Burton of Missouri and Cant P H Coney of Kansas withdrew when Brown's election became certain. All other officers are staff appointments to be announced later.
The board of canalization assessed W. A. Clark for 1,000,000 on his San Pedro railroad stock 2,410,000 on his United Verde mine and raised his bank assessment 649,000 totaling nearly 4,000,000. Clark failed to appear before the board. The remark ends with Talking causes more regret than silence.
