Will Curtis son of J N Curtis, about four miles beyond St. David, was killed by a lightning stroke during a severe thunderstorm. The 22 year old hunter found dead in a frame barn after the storm, with scorch marks from shoulder to leg. Funeral held at the Curtis home and burial in St David cemetery.
Mrs Frances Burnett arrived three months ago and urged humane societies to back a public fountain for dumb animals. Tomorrow the foundation will be laid on Grand Avenue near the town hall, marking the start of an attractive yet affordable project.
Mr. George Wilson aged 22, son of Shem Wilson, died Thursday after a typhoid illness. Miss Blanch Merrill visits at Westfield home while family spends days at Bisbee. A thresher works Miller ranch and last Saturday's storm damaged Curtis Flat road and an irrigation ditch. A youth dance hosted by Bob Wallace at H. Walker's, with punch served and stunts by J. E. Nordell. County Ranger Lou Stevens travels from Patagonia with wife to attend funeral rites for Harry Stevens, foreman of the Andes mine who died from gas suffocation rescuing a coworker, aged 40, unmarried. His mother and father, Mrs. Stevens of Oklahoma, and sister Miss Minnie Stevens of Dodge City, accompany them from Benson to Patagonia.
A car left standing in front of the Mansion Cafe yesterday morning rolled forward while occupants were at breakfast, struck the iron railing around the railroad park opposite. Slopes and unset brakes caused the mishap. one rail dented but car not perceptibly damaged.
The second count date July 31 nears as contestants campaign actively for votes and new subscriptions arrive. A $15 gold prize will be awarded, plus $10 for the top gain and $5 for the second, with venues in Benson and merchants like W.D. Martinez and Hi Wo & Co. offering 25 vote coupons with each dollar spent. Standings show Miss Vada Clark, Miss Estha Reddoch, and Miss Julia Treu leading among several nominees.
The Ladies Aid Society of the M. E. Church will meet with Mrs. L. E. Weig on Friday July 21 to piece a quilt. Come prepared.
Mr H G Brown has purchased the Pearl Adams property south of the railroad and the connected water plant. He is clearing the premises and restoring buildings. The family has moved in about two weeks ago.
Two young women from St. David, Blanche Merrill and Josephine Westfield, raced to outrun a heavy rainstorm that nearly surrounded Benson on Thursday afternoon. They kept ahead by a narrow margin as the clouds and rain closed in.
The Cobriza Mines Development Co. controlled by the Goodrich Lockhart Syndicate bonds to buy a defunct Benson smelting complex. The package includes a 50-ton blast furnace with blower boilers sampling plant engines and a 60 acre site plus a 100000 ton silver lead slag dump. Reputedly the slag carries $2.50 to $5 per ton of silver and gold.
Citizens met at the call of Fire Chief W. J. Bennett to plan equipment for the fire department. They approved buying 500 feet of hose and considered sending Ajax chemical engine on 30 days trial at $185, with another meeting set to view hose samples.
Heavy rainfall last Saturday flooded the Curtis Flat road and nearby fields, making the new county built route impassable. Officials say culverts and side ditches could not handle the water, washing out the roadway. Go to the Benson Coal and Ice Company for coal, ice and soda water.
