A wartime speech argues money alone cannot win a conflict, urging Americans to sacrifice comforts and buy $5 war savings certificates to fund the war effort. It cites vast bond issues, manpower needs, and weekly treasury demands, stressing personal responsibility and translating patriotism into action for victory.
The Benson Red Cross Branch reports shipments to famine relief from January 1917 to January 1918 including hospital shirts bandages knitted sponges garments and gauze compresses. Members meet weekly at the high school with fund appeals to cover yarn costs and calls for volunteers and donations to aid the war effort. A masquerade dance at Benson Saddle and Harness Shop invites attendance with tiered ticket pricing for women children and general admission.
A 1918 telegram from Hon. W. G. McAdoo to Cochise County bankers asks banks nationwide to reserve about one percent of loanable funds weekly to buy Treasury Certificates of indebtedness. He postpones the next Liberty Loan to ensure broad distribution and stresses patriotic duty and military needs.
The Arizona Bulletin reports the death of Joseph W. Ballard born 1859 in Payson Utah. He moved to Arizona in 1878 and to the Gila Valley in 1883 living in Eden Curtis Emery and died January 24 leaving a wife four children present at funeral with relatives. He served as Sunday School superintendent and as a member of Emery Ward's first Bishopric.

Burglars robbed Benson Lumber and Commercial Co. on Wednesday night using blankets to muffle the blast. Cash between fifty and seventy five dollars and over two hundred dollars in checks were taken. a nearby deposit of five hundred dollars by W. T. Robie occurred fifteen minutes before closing. The report also notes local farm activity and a long joke about feeding pigs to supply milk for troops in France.
Mrs Frank Crocker of Pana Illinois writes about her five year old son Paul who suffered a severe cold with lingering coughs last winter. After trying other medicines with no relief she used Chamberlains Cough Remedy and notes a first dose benefited him and he was cured with continued use.
