Flood destroys reinforced bridge on Benson Dragoon road
After weeks of rain and floodwater the reinforced concrete bridge across the San Pedro river near town collapsed last Sunday. The east abutment was undermined, causing the entire structure to fall into the bed of the stream. It could have been saved for about five hundred dollars with proper channel work and piers protection. county officials ignored repeated warnings. Built about a year ago at a cost of 27 800, the Topeka Bridge and Iron Co. completed the double arch structure replacing a prior iron bridge. The loss hinders local trade between Pomerene and Benson and disrupts the county road crossing toward the state line. The Bisbee Review notes the matter.
