Tucson hosts University Week with interscholastic state championships across track field and ball events. Records from past meets include 100 yard dash and discus throw as students compete April 16 to 20 for medals cups and school points toward a final loving cup.
Captain Hayes and Miss Hayes gave inspiring patriotic addresses at school yesterday. A drill and calisthenics club formed under Mr. Gray. The assembly room is decorated with flags and bunting. Next week the school will travel to Tucson for University Week events at the U of A. Mr. Buffington celebrates arrival of 120 feet of glass tubing after seven months. Chemistry contest tryouts underway for University competition.
Benson High School will join University Week events in a bid for a strong showing. The community hopes for a creditable performance across competitive activities.
A San Pedro Valley Red Cross Branch is formed at Benson High School with officers Mrs. A G Smith president Mrs J Mahoney treasurer Miss Myrtle Snyder secretary and membership open to women and men in Benson Pomere St David and surrounding valley. Principal H Q Robertson offers the high school building for meetings with one planned April 18 for women fourteen years and older to join.
A new serial tale titled the Web of Steel begins this week inviting readers to subscribe and follow a chapter by chapter adventure. The sneak preview promises a great story with ongoing suspense and action.
Loyalty Sunday was observed in Benson with a 4 p m parade led by Captain T E Thorpe. School children in white carried flags, followed by Benson High School scholars, citizens and vehicles. At the school grounds Prof H Q Robertson gave the principal address amid patriotic songs and prayers, ending with America.

Fifty thoroughbred Hereford bulls arrived in Tucson en route from Texas to McKinney cattle ranch to bolster Arizona's food supply strategy for wartime shortages. The herd includes twelve registered bulls and was transported by B F McKinney, president of McKinney Cattle Company, who recently acquired Vail Cattle Company. The Tucson Star also lists sales of Duroc Jersey pigs and a Jersey heifer from R W Boyle of St David.
Benson Rifle Club votes to become a defense organization amid wartime fears. At Monday meeting, members and non members discuss home protection, with committees formed and Captain Lyman H. Hayes and Captain Thorpe involved as plans progress. A follow up gathering showed continued applications and drift toward organized militia readiness.
