Direct deposit of Social Security checks begins nationwide

The program started in 23 states west of the Mississippi in August and expands to the rest of the nation by October with final nationwide rollout planned for late next year. It sends payments directly to banks or credit unions, reducing loss or theft and eliminating cashing delays. Beneficiaries enroll via SF 1199, and deposits are only to accounts with the same name as the recipient. The effort aims to speed transfers, cut government costs, and pave the way for electronic funds transfer.
