Salmon plan backed by committee in Vermont
In Montpelier UPI Gov. Thomas Salmon’s bill to raise the state sales tax from 3 percent to 4 percent will be sponsored by the Democratic majority on the House Ways and Means Committee. House Minority Leader Thomas Candon said the six Democrats may propose an alternate plan to address an expected budget deficit. House Majority Leader Richard Snelling questioned the urgency of a Sept. 29 special session Salmon proposed to push the hike, contending the economy may be stabilizing despite a projected revenue drop. Snelling warned the administration’s figures could overstate the crisis, estimating a possible deficit between 3 and 7 million dollars. See PLAN on back page.

The United States posted a 1.04 billion dollar August trade surplus as food exports rose while oil imports climbed. The year to date surplus reached 7.44 billion, with farm exports totaling 1.269 billion led by soybeans corn tobacco cotton rice and wheat. Oil import value rose to 2.16 billion.
