Vermont leaders weigh state aid cuts and sales tax change
Governor Salmon faces a $6 million shortfall in state aid for schools implying about a 12 percent cut to Montpelier funds. Bennington and Rutland districts see roughly $135000 and $18000 respectively, while others would feel varying impacts. Salmon argues for bone-cutting measures and urges a conciliatory approach to pass a constructive solution.

Hearst attorney calls tape release unethical
Patricia Hearst’s lawyer Terence Hallinan denounced government tape releases from her jail conversations as unethical tricks aimed at bolstering the case for no bail. The tapes, recorded with a school friend during her disappearance, are said to involve discussions of her attitude and alleged conditions of detention. Officials defend the taps as routine for jail security and disclosure to psychiatrists reviewing her mental state, with a possible postponement of her next hearing.
