B52s Strike Cambodian Sanctuaries and North Vietnam Bases

U.S. warplanes knocked out two MIG21s on the Yen Bal airfield northwest of Hanoi and hit Ben Ngoc army base near the city. Bombers attacked Cambodian sanctuaries along the invasion route to Saigon, while other strikes hit Hon Moi barracks and surrounding districts. A Navy Crusader pilot died taking off from Da Nang. Soldiers reported heavy fighting near Quang Tri and Ba To, with hundreds of North Vietnamese casualties claimed by various counts, and highway Saboteurs damaged two tunnels on Route 1 between Da Nang and Hue before repairs were to begin.

Brooke blames absenteeism for antiwar bill defeat

In Washington the Senate narrowly scrapped a plan to halt Indochina war funding within four months if POWs are released and missing servicemen accounted for. The measure failed 48 to 42 as McGovern campaigned in California. Brooke blamed absenteeism, while Dole criticized McGovern’s absence on key votes. The House already approved the foreign military aid package totaling about $2.1 billion in authorizations.

Freed POWs Fly Home Via Moscow

Three U S pilots freed from North Vietnam arrived in Moscow en route to the United States with four antiwar activists and two wives. The party then flew to Peking and planned continued travel toward New York, amid questions over routing and possible AWOL status.

Pact expected as result of Tanaka Chou En Lai talks

Charles Jim Carrell dies at 82 creator of Amos n Andy

Charles Jim Carrell, age 82, co creator of the Amos n Andy radio and TV series, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Chicago. He helped shape a landmark program despite portraying white origins of its black characters. He lived in Beverly Hills for years and had a long partnership with Freeman Gosden.

Colosseum Closed After Structural Dangers In Rome

In Rome the 1,892 year old Colosseum was shut to the public after inspectors found loose brick, stone chunks and earthquake-like vibrations from traffic. Officials said up to 45 pound pieces have fallen in recent weeks and traffic, weather, and weeds contributed. Nearby Forum and Palatine Hill buildings were also closed pending safety checks.

U S envoy in Phnom Penh escapes ambush blast

In Phnom Penh a boobytrap bomb struck the white U S ambassador Swank limousine. The blast killed two people and injured four civilians including a child. Deputy Ambassador Enders and the chauffeur escaped unharmed as the car burned and was destroyed. Swank is in the United States.
