Nearly Unnoticed Law Will Save Town 3437 Dollars
Vermont lawmakers repealed the highway assessment that charged towns for state road upkeep. Bennington faced a $3437.40 bill for roughly 11 miles of Vermont and U.S. 7, but Deputy Atty. Gen. Louis Peck ruled the repeal effective July 1 means towns are not liable. Town officials planned to hold due payment until October 10, and now expect no payment at all. The state highway department had projected $366,000 in highway taxes for the year, funds now in question.
