From Georgia to Brattleboro A Vermont Homecoming
Dale and Tricia Bagley once left Brattleboro for Georgia and later the sunbelt. They returned to Vermont after missing the fire department camaraderie, cool summers, and local friends, settling in Vernon and Brattleboro with their daughter Robyn. Dale became TSA news director and Tricia teaches in Vernon.

Sunderland drops plans for town meeting on grant
Sunderland officials abandoned a planned November Town Meeting for Sunderland voters to approve an EDA grant after consulting legal counsel. The Sunderland School Board accepted the $196,000 grant at a special meeting. The town’s attorney said approval steps were not required, though prior voter consent is common for grants. Martin and his wife, guidance counselors, accompany students to the fair.

Vermont architect touts cities as energy conservation key
Waitsfield architect Robert A. Burley testified before the House subcommittee that long term energy conservation hinges on urban planning. He argued cities offer mass transit, reuse of existing facilities, integrated industry and travel, and diverse densities, while current federal programs give local governments no defined role. He urged local officials be empowered with relevant data to guide decisions such as street lighting versus policing.

New Hampshire weighs cut in road salt use
Hearings are planned for late October or November before the House Science and Technology Committee on reducing road salt. Highway Maintenance Engineer John Hogan says cutting salt 20 percent would require about 2 million dollars for new snow-clearing equipment, with the state spending around 3 million annually to keep highways bare and having used over 140000 tons last winter. Hogan notes public demand for bare roads despite concerns about salt’s effects.
