United Nations action on international terrorism stalls as the 41 nation African bloc rejects General Assembly debate on the issue. The Political Committee suspends discussion and defers the item to the 1973 session, while other agenda items face similar delays.
Vice President Spiro Agnew’s office rejected the New York Times report that Nixon ordered an FBI inquiry into the U S Soviet grain sale. Agnew said the story was inaccurate both overall and in details. Nixon announced the probe on Wednesday.
Al Ahram editor Mohammed Hussein Heikal warned that Israel will press to seize additional Arab territory in weeks or months before a new peace effort by the United States and the Soviet Union. Heikal urged a summit to prepare for confrontation with Israel and the United States. He warned of possible Israeli strikes in Lebanon Syria or Egypt as part of a broader Middle East maneuver. A Bonn parliamentarian said West Germany will deploy a counterguerrilla police force within six months with 188 border troopers and radar helicopters.
About 200 rioters stormed a Dundalk police station holding IRA suspects as Irish army troops in riot gear fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. The mob set the station and several cars ablaze while fire crews were pelted with stones. A bomber’s arsenal was found during a Belfast dockside house search as gunfire erupted near Royal Victoria Hospital. An unidentified body was found in Belfast outskirts. U S jet bombers destroyed 33 bridges in North Vietnam on Thursday in strikes that hit the Som Hang railroad and highway spans 85 miles northwest of Hanoi near the China frontier. A photo recon jet was shot down in the North but the two man crew parachuted and were rescued. In South Vietnam President Nguyen Van Thien touted a firm stance on the central coast as reports of Viet Cong defections surfaced. Air Force raids also damaged 72 warehouses and 15 military barracks during the day.

The Nevada Physicians Union Local 678 has signed a six month collective bargaining agreement with Valley Hospital effective Oct. 1. The contract bars strikes and pays $50 an hour to union members on a hospital committee reviewing Medicare patient fees to curb excessive charges and insurer pushback. The union claims six members and says it has staff at every hospital in town.
