Soviet to boost Communist forces in Eastern Europe

The Soviet Union announced a build up of communist military power in Eastern Europe. Marshal Ivan Yakovobsky led a Warsaw Pact push by visiting Sofia to discuss strengthening the Warsaw Treaty Organization with Bulgarian leaders, amid Pravda editorials citing NATO provocation and defense needs.

Wallace Promises to Put Judiciary in Its Place

Jetliner hijacked to Havana from San Juan with 53 aboard

An Eastern Airlines Boeing 720 en route from San Juan to Miami with 53 aboard diverted silently to Cuba after radio contact was lost. The plane landed at Jose Marti Airport in Havana at 9 45 a m EDT. Passengers included conventioneers of the American Society of Travel Agents. FAA officials said the jet was about 40 miles southwest of Nassau when it veered toward Havana. The pilot later contacted the Havana tower but gave no voice response.
