Doctors Say Pope Paul VI Won’t Require Immediate Surgery

Senator urges probe into Army NRA surplus gun deal
Sen Robert P Griffin pressed the Senate to investigate why policemen cannot buy surplus Army carbines without joining and paying NRA dues. He charged the Army has made the NRA its exclusive sales agent for surplus rifles and ammunition, a claim echoed by Sen Philip Hart. The pair urged a rule giving police departments first option on surplus arms, while noting ordinary government surplus sales go to local and state bodies first.

House Votes 40 Million For Rat Control Program
The House approved a $40 million rat control add on a $1 billion health grants measure, sending it to the Senate. The plan clashes with HUD efforts to fight slum rats, which the House previously defeated but which remains alive in committee. Republican and Democratic defections shifted the mood from July, as lawmakers aimed to curb urban rat problems amid rising city violence.

Kennedys Retire Private Plane Caroline After 19 Years
The Convair 240 known as Caroline is retired after carrying three generations of Kennedys and their pets over 225,000 miles. The 19 year old craft flew its last Kennedy flight on September 17 with Joan Kennedy returning to Washington from Hyannis Port. Pilot Griscom hopes for one final sentimental hop from Hyannis Port to Boston. The aircraft, bought from American Airlines in 1959, helped JFK in the 1960 campaign, housing a small crew, reporters, a map table, private late President quarters, and a long cabin for 16 passengers. Griscom recalls one Milwaukee landing delay during the Wisconsin primary, but Kennedy never missed a scheduled stop.
