Hoff Challenged On Sales Tax
Stewart E. Allen of the Bennington School District urged Gov. Philip H. Hoff to keep an open mind about a sales tax in Vermont. He rebutted Hoff’s view that added state aid reduces local property taxes, noting a 32 percent tax jump this year and needs for a new 25 room elementary school and a 20 room high school addition. Allen warned against regressive effects without more aid and said voter resistance is rising.
