Pewter Exhibit Displays Vermonters 18th 19th Century Pieces

An 18th and 19th century pewter display opens in the Bennington Museum Parmelee Gallery through Oct 20. The exhibit features rare works by John Skinner Ebenezer Crossman and Thomas Melville II, with porrings plates spoons and tankards. A special case shows pewterers tools and molds. Richard Lee and Richard Lee Jr. are represented in separate cases. Buckle button spoon and basin molds illustrate over a century of pewter production. designed and researched by museum staff in the last three months. Hours are 9 to 6 daily through Oct 14 and 9:30 to 4:30 daily Oct 15 to Dec 1.

Pownal season halted as track cancels dog racing

Lights stayed dark at Green Mountain race track as owners prepared to move their greyhounds after a dispute with track owners led to the cancellation of the season from September through December. Patrick Rooney announced the shutdown and ordered the 16 kennels to leave by 6:30 p.m. The FBI opened an inquiry into threats related to the dispute while New England Association head Rocky Soloveno stated kennels would relocate and be ready to race at other tracks if negotiations fail.

No Bail Set for Patty Hearst in San Francisco Case

UPI reports federal Judge Oliver J. Carter held Patricia Hearst without bail on bank robbery and firearm charges. Hearst, 21, was captured after 592 days on the run with Symbionese Liberation Army members. A Tuesday bail hearing was scheduled to address defense and prosecution arguments.

Vermont Republicans seek delay of tax session

Vermont House Republican leaders moved to recess the September 29 special session called by Gov. Salmon to discuss a proposed minimum one percent sales tax increase. The plan would extend the session two to four weeks to let money committees study the fiscal situation, with the regular session not due to start until January.

Church committee to hear Nixon spying plan hearings

Sen. Frank Church said his Senate intelligence panel will start public hearings on Monday into Nixon administration plans to create a domestic spying agency inside the White House. He may summon former President Nixon if needed and will focus on the Houston plan. The hearings follow a week of talks on the CIA stockpiling issue and its 1970 destruction order.
