Coventry CT teachers strike turns ugly in weekend standoff

In Coventry Rhode Island the school committee refused to resume talks until 291 suspended teachers return to classrooms. Demonstrators jeered job applicants crossing picket lines outside Junior High West as two applicants wore masks. Police escorted those crossing the lines, and reporter Bruce McIntyre was arrested briefly amid scuffles. The district plans to close 11 schools and replace staff while unions push for higher pay.

Vermont hearings on small farms in New England

Washington report says Rep. James Jeffords announced that a House subcommittee will hold hearings in Putney Vermont on September 30 to examine problems facing small family farms in New England. The event follows a prior hearing planned for Burlington October 1 on brucellosis afflicting Vermont cattle.

Springfield Faces Court Ruling Over Municipal Hydro Project
