Court rules against hydro plant in Vermont town

Vermont Supreme Court invalidated Springfield's March 1975 town meeting vote on a 53 million hydroelectric project citing inadequate 30 day notice in the local paper and improper validation. The ruling also sent a public service contract suit back for further review amid alleged right to know violations and fund use concerns.

Water line overrun sparks debate on town board

East Road water extension overruns total 970 058 dollars with Keller Construction blamed for extra costs. Engineer Eugene Bilodeau defended the increase saying state may cover up to 35 percent while excess costs would be funded from existing state funds. Norman Stratton condemned management and inspector performance, urging immediate action. The board recommended continuing paving and discussed a new 8 inch line to Old Bennington and approving water supply for 48 apartments at Convent Avenue and West Main Street.

Arlington Water Co faces state health order after emergency meeting

A standing room crowd heard Vermont Health official Kenneth Stone outline a state order requiring Norton Barber and the Arlington Water Co to start repairs on the well and water system within 10 days or face a $500 fine. The boil water order could be lifted after completion. The effort follows a 1975 sanitary survey finding deficiencies and a plan to improve, with a preliminary $6,000 cost and no progress since. The meeting also highlighted ongoing concerns about leakage, animal contamination, and a non buried pipe near a storm sewer, with residents urging prompt, verifiable compliance.
