Model day care home leads Vermont effort

The Vermont Welfare Department has licensed only one day care home in Bennington County, Mrs. Leonora Longtin’s on Grove Street, while two more are poised for licenses. Officials praise Longtin as a model provider and push to expand licensing statewide. Meanwhile, Mrs. Gerald Amadon on Silver Street runs a high-demand Montessori-based home with a waiting list, though she questions some regulations such as required medicals and licensing for non-relatives. Proposals for day care centers, often church-run, are described as better suited for larger groups and formal education, with the Bennington Friends of the Retarded funding a local center and the Bennington-Rutland Opportunity Council seeking federal funds, hampered by lack of innovative program support. Tomorrow: A model day care home.
