James C. Danforth pleaded guilty to second degree murder of his father Joseph Danforth in Pownal. Superior Judge Robert Larrow ruled him a delinquent minor and recommended commitment to Weeks School for the remainder of minority. The 16 year old’s plea was entered after psychiatric evidence and medical examiners’ reports were reviewed. The case drew family and state officials as the judge urged a path back into society while acknowledging the severity of the act. Danforth and his mother acted as guardian during proceedings. His siblings attended the session.
George W. Ball former Undersecretary of State spoke at the Hotel Equinox to jurists in Manchester. He criticized U S bombing in the north and urged no clear method to withdraw from Vietnam noting the disturbing element in American life.
