95 Die in Crash of French Jet

A Caravelle jet from Corsica plunged into the Mediterranean eleven minutes out of Nice after encountering a sudden storm, killing all 95 aboard. It was the worst air disaster since the South African Airways Boeing 707 crash at Windhoek last April, with 123 lives lost. a search party found debris.

Caravelle Crash near Cap D Antibes Leaves Dozens Dead

A twin engine Caravelle with 89 aboard crashed about 12 miles offshore near Cap D Antibes. A spokesman said there were no survivors. Rescue boats reported stormy seas. Of the passengers 13 were children and six crew were aboard. The plane, recently put into service, was en route from Corsica to Nice No 1611. The pilot radioed an engine fire before silent contact. Could involve many Americans. many passengers were tourists. Searchers scoured for the missing craft.

Davis Triumphs Over Oakes In Vermont GOP Governor Nomination

Deane C. Davis, 67, insurance executive, won the Republican nomination for Vermont governor, defeating Atty. Gen. James L. Oakes by a wide margin. Davis led 38,684 to 23,398, with other statewide races showing Aiken and Tafts winners. Davis will face Democrat John J. Daley in November.

State Drops Adultery Charge Against Rev. David Johnson

In Newport Vermont a Vermont state's attorney moved to drop an adultery charge against Rev. David L. Johnson of Irasburg after a California judge refused extradition of the woman involved. Mrs. Barbara Lawrence, 23, of Seaside, California, was found guilty of adultery there and given probation. The case highlighted cross state issues and a nighttime shooting in the minister's town.

Viet Cong Attack Strikes Tay Ninh Near Saigon

About 1,000 Viet Cong attacked Tay Ninh from Cambodian bases, overrunning suburbs around the city 55 miles northwest of Saigon during a monsoon. Vietnamese and U.S. forces repelled assaults toward the city center but kept Viet Cong entrenched in hamlets west of downtown. Reports note repeated Communist defeats at Tay Ninh and mention the McNamara line project being largely abandoned along the Da Nang to DMZ stretch.

Off-Duty Vermont Trooper Killed in New Haven Crash

Theodore Butterfield 22, a one-year Vermont state police member, died when his private car struck a tree stump and overturned in New Haven. Butterfield, a 1967 State Police Academy graduate, was assigned to the Rutland barracks since August 1967.
