In Vermont, Hoff won the Senate nomination defeating Meyer and Bove, while O'Brien claimed the Democratic gubernatorial bid over Daley. Prouty and Da vis face Hoff and O’Brien in November as Hayes weighs an independent run. Stafford and O’Shea led GOP and Libertarian-leaning contests, with Burgess and Miller winning key lieutenant governor and secretary posts.
Lt. Gov. Thomas L. Hayes a liberal GOP maverick lost the Vermont primary to Gov. Deane C. Davis by a wide margin 79 percent to 16 percent while suggesting he might run as an independent in November. Hayes blamed liberal Republican crossover for his defeat and said there is little hope for a liberal within the party.
Bennington County supports Daley with a 300 vote edge over O'Brien in the Democratic governor race while Hoff dominates the statewide ballot. Davis leads the GOP governor field locally as Prouty tops the Republican Senate contest, with Stafford and Maloney, Moss, and Fox strong in county tallies.
MONTPELIER UPI A Salisbury based poll by Saint Michael's College professor Vincent Naramore narrowly matched the statewide results in the Democratic governor race with 58 42 projected and actual 56 44 for O'Brien and Daley The Republican governor result was far from close with predictions of 66 34 vs actual 80 20 The poll also projected Stafford at 80 plus percent in a Republican House race and Burgess at 52 25 18 with results 59 25 16 respectively
A Trans International Airlines charter crashed near Jamaica Bay on approach to Kennedy Airport, killing all 11 aboard including seven stewardesses. The flight carried 250 young Europeans to Washington to board a later shuttle service. Investigators, including NTSB officials, recovered cockpit voice and flight data for analysis. The victims were all from the San Francisco area. names and roles listed. airport operations were disrupted as flames were fought and flights diverted.
Woodford water tests show high total coliform counts and two sources of fecal coliforms from Woodford Lake. Sanitary engineer Leroy Grunewald says 11 samples had high counts, plans for a water quality health code and sewerage rules, with a state health review and public hearing. A state team will run dye tests next week to locate pollution sources. Selectman Joseph W. King says the town has battled the issue for 20 years and aims to lead in fixing it.
