Tight Money Affects Local Housing Market In Bennington
The second of three articles notes tighter national money lending is curbing Bennington mortgages and homebuilding. Real estate transfers drop about one third in four months, while new housing starts fall sharply, especially chalets and second homes. Yet the overall construction season remains buoyant with the new union school and hospital additions. Local builders say Bennington’s smaller scale softens impact versus Burlington, and buyers remain cautious amid high taxes and plans for a new highway bypass.
