Vermont study to examine drivers in fatal highway crashes
State police detective Irvin W. Maranville will lead a yearlong Vermont project with University of Vermont researchers to study behavioral aspects of road fatalities. Financed by a 115,865 dollar National Highway Safety Bureau grant, the effort interviews drivers or families to learn attitudes and personality traits while keeping identities confidential. The aim is understanding accidents and not assigning blame, with findings shared through the state police system. Maranville, a 1958 recruit who served in the Navy and has five children, works with Dr. M W Perrine and colleagues.
